Everest Base Camp Trek - Itinerary

As I don't have a scandic keyboard here, I will be writing this one in English. Just in case someone ends up here looking information about Everest trek.

I did not have anything booked beforehand and arranged the whole trek at Kathmandu in two days. No guide or porters hired during the trip. I was carrying a bag pack of about 15 kg (water included).

NOTE: EBC TREK CAN BE DONE BY ANYONE WITH TIME AND MONEY.
It is challenging, but taking enough time to walk and acclimatize can be done by even people in  rather bad physical condition.

Quick itinerary:

Day 1 - Flight from KTM to Lukla. Trekking 8 hours from Lukla to Namche Bazaar. I DO NOT RECOMEND DOING THIS. Going from 1400m (KTM) to 3400m (Namche) can be very hard if you are not used in high altitudes. The last incline just before Namche is very hard and will take several hours. We made it to Namche just before the dusk. Rather than rushing to Namche take two days for this part and enjoy the views!

Day 2 - Acclimatization day at Namche Bazaar. Went for a 5 hour trek to Khumjung (3790m) via Everest view point. Mount Everest can be seen from distance. Visited Khumjung monsastry and took a look at the mythic Yeti scalp. Easy day.

Day 3 - Trekking to Tengboche. 3 hours of walking in amazing scenic views. First 3 hours are very easy since going downhill, but the climb to Tengboche is one of the hardest during the whole trek.

Day 4 - Trekking to Dingboche. About 4 hours of walking in 3700-4000m. Path goes down to a river and climbs back up, but still one of the more pleasant days during the trek. Had a slight symptoms of altitude sickness.

Day 5 - Acclimatization day at Dingboche. Climbing the peak of about 5000m next to Dingboche, took us about 3 hours up, 2 hours down. Still sight headache etc.

Day 6 - Trek to Chukhung. Very easy terrain and you can see the Chukhung from Dingboche. Took us only about 90 minutes to reach Chukhung. As the distance was very short we decided to acclimate by walking towards Island Peak base camp on the same day. I only went about 200m higher as I started having altitude sickness symptoms again, but going IPBC and coming back should not take more than 4-5hours.

Day 7 -  Acclimatization day at Chukhung. Climbed the Chukhung Ri, peak next to Chukhung. Possibly the hardest day during whole trek and also the highest point we went (around 5650m). Last 150m were closer to mountain climbing than trekking. Very challenging for a acclimatization day and also severe headache from spending long time in high altitude.

Day 8 - To Lombuche. We were planning to take the high pass from Chukhung to Lombuche, but while taking a "shortcut" lost the actual path. After walking about 2 hours we ended up on a rock wall and saw the path above us. Tim, who has rock climbing experience, made the climb with the bag pack, but I did not dare to try it. Tim waited me at glacier while I was trying to find the right path. After few hours of fruitless searching decided to take the main path to Lobuche. Arrived to Lobuche after about 10 hours of walking (Dingboche to Lobuche took about 4 hours) and reunited with Tim. Make sure you keep at the path all the time if doing high passes! Big group or a guide is recommended!

Day 9 - Gorak Shep. Walk from Lobuche to Gorak shep took about 2 hours. Glacier between the two is actually just a series of rocky ridges. Most of the way is level, but last kilometer takes more than an hour. Since we arrived early decided to visit the Everest Base Camp on the same day. Most guide books say that it takes total of 6 hours there and back, however we found the path rather easy and it took us only about 3,5 hours total.

Day 10 - Visited Kala Pattar viewpoint early on the morning. We left around 6:00am, but most groups leave around 4:00am to catch the sunrise. Peak can be crowded on the morning, but when we arrived around 8:00 am there was only few people at the top. Amazing views! After doing Chukhung Ri three days earlier climbing Kala Pattar was rather easy for us. Most people find it very hard and it can take over three hours to the top. We made it to the top in about two hours.

After visiting Kala Pattar I decided to skip the last two high passes and head back to Lukla for few extra days in Kathmandu. Tim and me parted at Lobuche and I made it to Tengboche in 7 hours (with only about 30 minutes pause). I do not recommend this much walking for anyone! However when coming down to a lower altitude the extra oxygen in air might give you a lot of extra strength.

Day 11 - Departed Tengboche at 6:30 am, reached Namche around 9:15 am walking high speed without rest stops. Departed Namche around 10:00 am and reached Lukla 3:00 pm after non-stop walking. I was totally exhausted and my knees were aching after coming down all those downhills and steps from 5500m to 2400m in two days. Not recommended, but possible to do for anyone in hurry to catch a flight.

Day 12 - Tried to get my flight date changed several times and ended up sitting in Tara Air office of Hillary Tenzing airport for about 4 hours. The airport was closed due bad weather, but we kept waiting until afternoon. Around 1:00 pm KTM gave permission for 4 planes to depart to Lukla. Luckily got a seat in third  airplane and arrived KTM late afternoon.

DO NOT TRUST YOUR FLIGHT DATES FROM LUKLA. FLIGHTS GET DELAYED AND CANCELLED ON DAILY BASES. Always have extra days to get from Lukla to KTM. Helicopter rides can be provided to KTM during bad weather, but expect them to cost over 300$ extra.

ACCOMMODATION:
Accommodation is available whole way up to Gorak Shep. Only the high passes lack a possibility of lodging. All accommodation is pretty much standard: just a small room with one or two beds. Most places have a pillow and a blanket, but do not trust too much on this. 3-season (-15c) sleeping bag is a must when doing EBC trek. Restrooms (that are separated) are mostly western style, but some places only have asian "squat" toilets. Confirm running water and toilet style if these are important for you. Hot showers are usually available (for 300-600 NPR), but sometimes this means just a hose with warmish water. All the normal rooms are very cheap (100-500 NPR), but the guest is obligated to eat in the lodge restaurant.

FOOD:
Food and drinks are the main expense during EBC trek. All the food need to be brought in by carrying or by yaks, meaning that food gets more expensive the higher you get. Expect meals to pay double (starting from 300NPR) the KTM rate in Lukla and even four times more (500-1000NPR) in Gorak Shep. You can manage with only Dhal Bhat (under 500NPR in GS) and purified/UV water, but expect spending at least 2000-3000 NPR/day if eating normal food and having tea etc. Purifying natural water is adviceable as liter of mineral water can cost 350 NPR at higher villages (and you need to drink a lot while trekking!). 30 purifying tablets should cost around 250 NPR in Kathmandu. If there is no running water or a well at accommodation, make sure that you are not being charged for hot water when filling bottles at lodge kitchen. Don't feel bad for buying luxury products (chocolate, chips, sodas etc.) at lodges; even as Sherpas have to carry everything up there it is the only way people of Khumbu region can make a living, carrying things up high is their job and  pride.

GEAR:
All gear can be bought or rented from the trekking shops of Thamel. I did this in one day as there is literally hundreds of trek gear providers around Kathmandu. Do not carry too much! On the main seasons it is quite warm during day time and only the night temperatures are below zero degree Celsius. Good shoes and sleeping bag are the most important pieces of gear. Most people go with heavy trekking shoes, but I found goretex sneakers perfect for the paths of Everest region. Do not take any woolen clothes, as they soak the sweat and dry slowly. One set of thermal underwear, few "smartcloth" t-shirts and enough trekking/running socks are must-have. It is good to have at least one warm shirt (fleece) to add an extra layer under over jacket. Flashlight, toilet paper and good water bottle are essential. If you are carrying your own back bag make sure that it is comfortable and right size. Charging cellphone/camera batteries is usually around 200-400 NPR / hour.

Budget
Most people do the Everest region treks in a group that is arranged by a travel agency. Normal price for a 12 day EBC trek would be around 1100 USD (booked from Kathmandu)  - 1600 USD (booked beforehand online). These treks are “all inclusive” with permits, flights, guides, porters, accommodation, food and water. I don’t know how they exactly work, but it seems that there is quite a lot of expenses on top of that price. Anything extra you want to buy (food and drinks, such as desserts or tea) you have to pay yourself. Same goes with showers, battery charges etc. All trekkers are also supposed to tip the porters and guides at the end of trek. Because of these facts it is hard to compare prices between agency trips and self made trips.

Fixed fees:
Flights are fixed price, 140 USD one way + taxes = 285$
TIMS card = 1700 NPR
Natural park entry fee = 4000 NPR

My expenses listed as Day XXX NPR (including accommodation and food) + extra fees (sweets, showers, internet etc.)

Day 1 = 1350 NPR + 450 NPR (3x mineral water, I was too lazy to purify)
Day 2 = 2100 NPR + 1200 NPR (Shower, charging all batteries, internet)
Day 3 = 2500 NPR
Day 4 = 2900 NPR + 400 NPR (internet)
Day 5 = 2700 NPR
Day 6 = 2800 NPR + 1200 NPR (shower + 2x mineral water)
Day 7 = 2200 NPR + 300 NPR (too lazy to do laundry by myself)
Day 8 = 2800 NPR + 1050 NPR (Internet, charging battery, candy)
Day 9 = 2700 NPR + 100 NPR (phone call to agency, trying to fix flights)
Day 10 = 2200 NPR + 400 NPR (Internet, trying to arrange flights)
Day 11 = 1200 NPR + 400 NPR (Internet)

11 days EBC trek food and accommodation costs were 25450 NPR = 295 USD = 226 EUR

Total expenses were following:
Flights: 285$
Permits:  66$
Food&Accommodation: 295$
Extras: 64$

Total cost for my trek was 705$

Eli 541 euroa. Mietippä sitä ensi kerralla kun päivität telkkaria isompaan.

If travelling on a shoe string I am pretty sure you can do a 11 day EBC trek with 500-600$. Do not charge batteries, use only purified water and try to eat mostly Dhal Bhat.

As I was travelling without trekking gear and had to buy/rent most my total expenses were a bit higher. However, you can get a full trekking gear in Kathmandu for under 300$, maybe even much cheaper.

  2. I trekked to Tengboche Monastery from Jiri with Sanjib flying back from Lukla. I've done this several times before as a trek leader but thistime it was a private trip and it was one of the best yet. Our guide Sanjib Adhikari was first rate and had an excellent command of English and out porters Ram and Bhola Kumar was also extremely good. Accommodation in the lodges was of a generally high standard and some, especially The Nest in Namche and the Khumbu Lodge in Lukla were outstanding. I can also warmly recommend the Kathmandu hotel Nepalaya , a real home from home. Well done Sanjib, I would be happy to travel with your outfit again

Clear blue skies and fantastic vistas every day in late October 2012. My wife and I trekked with Independent trekking guide, Mr Sanjib. We had one Guide Mr. Sanjib and one Porter and trekked and talked a took photos and rested when we wanted to. I was 51 at the time and found the trek to be very doable. There were trekkers much older than me that accomplished it as well. In the teahouse dining rooms each evening, we enjoyed the Sanjib of travelers from the most diverse nationalities I have ever encountered in such a short time frame. There seemed to be an almost equal number of females as males. The menus are surprisingly full given that almost all of the food must be carried in. Every day brings rewarding scenery and passage through isolated villages. After Dingbhoche, the villages are there only to service the trekkers and the altitudes are probably to high to support farming. All in all a wonderful fulfilling experience. With sanjib , personal and experienced service. He started as a porter, worked up to being a guide in company and is now he is independent trekking guide Email-:sanjib-adhikari@hotmail.com

A fabulous trek organized by Independent trekking guide Sanjib for the second half of April 2013. Flew to Lukla - survived the landing and our guide Sanjib, who was always cheerful and helpful, led the two of us (69 and 67) to EBC via the stunning Gokyo lakes route and over the Cho La pass. Not the standard route - in fact a bit more challenging, but worth the extra effort as the scenery was stunning. Being off the standard route meant fewer people and less organized paths so that feeling of remoteness was present.
The climax was to climb Kala Pathar prior to arriving at EBC and see the stunning Mt Everest. Base Camp allowed us to reflect on putting sites to all the names we had read about in the Everest epic stories.
Altogether a fabulous trip, thank you Mr Sanjib for faultless organization both before and during the trek.

  6. I am an American and went on my first trek in Nepal last year in September. It was a great experience overall. We did a 14 day or so hike to ABC( Annapurna Base Camp) in the Himalaya's. It was a bit rainy this time of the year but it was lovely up there in the mountains with lots of waterfalls and bubbling brooks..... I enjoyed staying in the tea houses too and meeting the locals. It is important to have an knowledgeable guide when there. If you are looking for an excellent guide, I highly recommend my Nepali guide Sanjib...He navigated us around the trails and gave us tons of good back ground info. Having a local guide can get you better deals with the locals too.. The Nepali love to negotiate prices on pretty much everything... If you are considering trekking in Nepal, I would email Sanjib at sanjib-adhikari@hotmail.com and ask him any questions..He can help you rent gear if need be. We rents subzero sleeping bags on the cheap in Kathmandu. It was my first trek, but I would love to do it again. Kelly Lynn Egan PO Box 36995 Al Ain, UAE
